Cinque Terre in November: Zero Regrets

Everyone tells you to go in summer. I went in November and I’m here to tell you they’re wrong.

The numbers

Apartment in Vernazza in November: €55 a night. Same apartment in July: €180. Crowd on the Monterosso-to-Vernazza trail on a Tuesday morning: six people. In summer that same trail is a slow-moving queue of overheating tourists. I hiked it in two hours, ate a focaccia at the top, and had the viewpoint to myself for twenty minutes.

What you actually give up

Some boat services stop running between villages. A couple of restaurants close for the season. The water’s too cold to swim. That’s genuinely it. Everything else — the villages, the pesto, the views, the wine — all still there without a queue or a booking.

Manarola at sunset

In peak season people literally queue for a spot at this viewpoint. I walked up at 5pm on a Wednesday in November, sat on a wall, and watched the whole thing with about eight other people. One of them had a flask of wine and offered me some. That is the off-season experience right there.
